Are Chihuahuas good guard dogs?

Chihuahuas are small in size, so they deter through noise rather than physical threat. A 1 to 3kg dog will not stop a determined intruder, but a loud, persistent alarm still sends most chancers to an easier target.
Training and responsibility
Chihuahuas are strong-willed, so any protective instinct must be paired with firm, experienced training to stay controllable. A protective dog you cannot call off is a danger to visitors, delivery drivers, and you. Socialisation from puppyhood is what separates a stable, discerning dog from a reactive one, and formal protection training should only ever be done through a qualified professional.

Bold dogs don't hesitate when the moment requires action. Decisiveness matters when deterrence needs to be convincing. Loyalty to the family drives guard behaviour more reliably than training alone. Should you get this breed specifically to guard?
Choose a dog for the life you can give it, not for a job it may spend years never doing. For everyday home security, a naturally alert family dog plus good locks and lighting does more than most people expect. A miserable, under-stimulated dog guards nothing well.
