With a gentle, loyal, playful temperament, saint berdoodles are wired for company, not confrontation. They may bark at the door, but the tail is usually wagging while they do it.
Size and deterrence
Saint Berdoodles have physical presence on their side. At 40 to 80kg, the mere sight of the dog, and the sound of a deep bark, is enough to make an opportunist look elsewhere. Deterrence is most of what home security from a dog actually amounts to.
Training and responsibility
Saint Berdoodles are easy to train, which helps if you want reliable alert behaviour and a solid recall. A protective dog you cannot call off is a danger to visitors, delivery drivers, and you. Socialisation from puppyhood is what separates a stable, discerning dog from a reactive one, and formal protection training should only ever be done through a qualified professional.
What Saint Berdoodles temperament means for guarding
Gentle temperament means warning rather than follow-through. Deterrent value is present, but the physical commitment behind it is limited. Loyalty to the family drives guard behaviour more reliably than training alone. Protecting the people they're attached to is instinctive. Intelligence produces more accurate threat assessment. These dogs distinguish between real threats and false alarms better than less discerning breeds.
Should you get this breed specifically to guard?
Choose a dog for the life you can give it, not for a job it may spend years never doing. For everyday home security, a naturally alert family dog plus good locks and lighting does more than most people expect. A miserable, under-stimulated dog guards nothing well.
