Are Shikokus good guard dogs?
Shikokus will raise the alarm, which is what stops most opportunists, but they are not built to physically see off an intruder. As a watchdog they do the job most homes actually need.

Described as loyal, alert, energetic, spirited, shikokus are alert enough to notice and announce, but they lack the size or hard edge of a dedicated guarding breed. That makes them a natural watchdog rather than a deterrent an intruder would fear.
Size and deterrence
Shikokus are moderate in size, so they deter through noise rather than physical threat. A 16 to 26kg dog will not stop a determined intruder, but a loud, persistent alarm still sends most chancers to an easier target.
Training and responsibility
Shikokus are moderately trainable, so consistent work is needed to shape alertness into something reliable. A protective dog you cannot call off is a danger to visitors, delivery drivers, and you. Socialisation from puppyhood is what separates a stable, discerning dog from a reactive one, and formal protection training should only ever be done through a qualified professional.
What Shikokus temperament means for guarding
Loyalty to the family drives guard behaviour more reliably than training alone. Protecting the people they're attached to is instinctive. Constant alertness means nothing happens in or near the property without the dog knowing. Changes in routine, unfamiliar vehicles, and quiet approaches all get registered. High energy needs a proper outlet. A guard dog that isn't exercised adequately redirects that alertness into generalised reactivity, which is harder to manage. Independent dogs make their own threat assessments rather than looking to their owner for direction. Reliable for property guarding; needs more management in social situations.
Should you get this breed specifically to guard?
Choose a dog for the life you can give it, not for a job it may spend years never doing. For everyday home security, a naturally alert family dog plus good locks and lighting does more than most people expect. A miserable, under-stimulated dog guards nothing well.
