Building up alone time

Teach it in small steps. Start with seconds, not hours: step out, come back before any fuss starts, and repeat, stretching the time only as the dog stays relaxed. Keep departures and arrivals low-key so they become routine rather than emotional events. A calm dog left with a stuffed food toy learns that your leaving predicts something good.

Exercise first. American Foxhounds left alone with unspent energy will find their own entertainment, and you will not like it. A good walk and some brain work before you go turns a restless dog into a sleepy one.

When it is not enough
