Building up alone time

Teach it in small steps. Start with seconds, not hours: step out, come back before any fuss starts, and repeat, stretching the time only as the dog stays relaxed. Keep departures and arrivals low-key so they become routine rather than emotional events. A calm dog left with a stuffed food toy learns that your leaving predicts something good.

A short walk or a game before you leave helps them settle, and a predictable routine matters more than the length of any single absence.

When it is not enough

If a dog is left too long or too abruptly, separation anxiety can set in: barking, howling, toileting indoors, destruction, or refusing food. This is distress, not defiance, and punishment makes it worse. A dog walker or daycare covers longer days, and for genuine separation anxiety a qualified behaviourist and your vet are the right first call.

Lively dogs feel the contrast between active engagement and sudden solitude very sharply. The quiet of an empty house is not neutral for them. Bold dogs that struggle with separation tend to express it loudly. Barking and destruction rather than quiet anxiety is the typical presentation. Curiosity works in both directions. A dog with interesting things to investigate settles. A dog in a bare room with nothing to occupy it invents its own problems. Intelligence makes enrichment tools more effective. A puzzle feeder or stuffed Kong will hold this type of dog's attention through the hardest part of departure, the first ten minutes.
