Temperament and attachment

Described as gentle, reserved, sensitive, salukis form intense bonds with their people. That devotion is lovely when you are home and the root of the problem when you are not, because being apart truly unsettles them.

Building up alone time

Teach it in small steps. Start with seconds, not hours: step out, come back before any fuss starts, and repeat, stretching the time only as the dog stays relaxed. Keep departures and arrivals low-key so they become routine rather than emotional events. A calm dog left with a stuffed food toy learns that your leaving predicts something good.

Exercise first. Salukis left alone with unspent energy will find their own entertainment, and you will not like it. A good walk and some brain work before you go turns a restless dog into a sleepy one.

When it is not enough

If a dog is left too long or too abruptly, separation anxiety can set in: barking, howling, toileting indoors, destruction, or refusing food. This is distress, not defiance, and punishment makes it worse. A dog walker or daycare covers longer days, and for genuine separation anxiety a qualified behaviourist and your vet are the right first call.

What Salukis temperament means when alone

Sensitive dogs pick up on departure cues well before you leave. Keys, coat, shoes. The anxiety often starts before you've reached the door. Independent temperament is an advantage for alone time. These dogs are less psychologically dependent on constant human presence than companion breeds bred specifically for closeness.
