What nobody tells you about big dogs
Large dogs are generally classed as 30 kg and above. What's counterintuitive is that many of them are calmer indoors than a Jack Russell or a Miniature Poodle. A Greyhound will sleep for 18 hours. A Bernese Mountain Dog will park itself in front of the radiator and refuse to move. Size doesn't equal energy. But it does equal a set of practical considerations that most buyers underestimate.
Food costs are the most obvious one. A Great Dane on a quality dry food can eat 600–800 g per day, compared to 150–200 g for a Beagle. Over a year that's a significant bill. Feed a big dog cheap food and you'll often pay the difference in vet costs. Joint problems, skin conditions, and digestive issues are all more common in large breeds fed on poor-quality diets. Budget £80–£150 per month in food for most large breeds, and more for giants.
Insurance premiums scale with size. For a Labrador you might pay £40–£60 per month for reasonable lifetime cover. For a Rottweiler or a Leonberger, expect £70–£120. Vet costs themselves are higher too. Anaesthesia, medications, and surgical procedures are all dosed by body weight. A routine operation that costs £600 for a Spaniel can cost £1,200 for a German Shepherd.
Lead-pulling is a practical safety issue that small dog owners don't face in the same way. A 40 kg dog that hasn't been properly leash-trained can drag a child or a small adult into traffic. Training is non-negotiable with large breeds, and it needs to start early. A 15 kg puppy that jumps up is an inconvenience; a 45 kg adult that does the same thing is a liability.
There are also UK-specific considerations worth knowing. Many private landlords and housing associations explicitly restrict large breeds. Some list specific breeds, others impose blanket weight limits of 25 kg or lower. If you rent, check your tenancy agreement carefully. Council housing in England and Wales often prohibits dogs over a certain size altogether. Finding pet-friendly rented accommodation with a large breed is difficult in most UK cities.
The car question is real. A 35 kg Labrador fits in most estate boots. A pair of Leonbergers does not. If you drive a hatchback, factor in whether the breed you're considering will actually fit before you commit. Boot space, ramp access for older dogs, and whether your vehicle can safely transport the dog are worth thinking through from the start.
