Dog breeds that get along with cats

128 breeds with a track record of coexisting with cats — plus honest advice on what determines success in multi-pet households.

What "good with cats" actually means

Dog-cat compatibility is a spectrum, not a binary. At one end you have Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. Breeds with low prey drive and a soft mouth instinct. Which are among the easiest dogs to introduce into a home with cats. At the other end, sighthounds, most terriers, and breeds with a strong hunting background can be dangerous to cats, regardless of how well-trained they are. A lurcher chasing a fleeing cat isn't being disobedient. It's doing exactly what its genetics prepared it for.

The distinction that matters most isn't breed alone. It's whether the prey drive is directed at small fast-moving animals, and whether the individual dog has been cat-tested. A dog that grew up alongside a resident cat and has never shown interest is a very different proposition to a dog that's lived in kennels its whole life and has no idea how to behave around one. Rescue centres will often cat-test dogs before adoption, and that test result is useful information.

Introduction method matters enormously. The single biggest mistake people make is letting a dog and cat meet face-to-face in an open room on day one. The cat panics, flees, the dog chases. And that chase pattern becomes the default. A much better approach: scent swapping first (swap bedding between rooms), then controlled parallel exposure with the dog on a lead, then graduated free interaction with the cat always able to escape to high ground or a separate room. This takes days or weeks, not hours.

Age at introduction is a significant factor. A puppy socialised with cats during the 8–16 week critical period learns to read feline body language and typically doesn't develop strong prey responses towards the household cats it knows. This doesn't mean it'll be safe with all cats. A strange cat running in the garden is still fair game for many dogs. But for indoor cohabitation, early exposure is the single most reliable predictor of success.

The individual cat matters too. A confident cat that stands its ground, hisses once, and bats the dog on the nose is communicating clearly. Most dogs learn quickly. A timid cat that runs and hides continually is inadvertently practising the prey-chase sequence with the dog every day. If your cat is very fearful, be especially conservative about the dogs you'll introduce them to, and make sure the cat always has a dog-free zone it can retreat to permanently.

The breeds listed below have consistently demonstrated lower prey drive and more reliable cat tolerance. They're not a guarantee. Supervision is always required until you're certain both animals are settled. But they represent your best starting point for a multi-pet household.
